Moscow celebrates its 864th birthday this weekend, with some 700 events planned to take place all over the city.

The Russian capital traditionally marks City Day on the first weekend of September, and this year most festivities will be on Sunday, September 4.
Red Square is to be the centre stage of the celebrations, with some 6,500 spectators expected to gather for the official opening at midday, military band performances in the evening and pyrotechnic salute to close the festivities.
Five boulevards are to be turned into “Boulevards of Arts”, each with its own theme. Nikitsky Bulvar will feature contemporary cinematography, Strastnoi Bulvar will have poets and bards, Tsvetnoi Bulvar will showcase dance and circus performances, Rozhdestvensky Bulvar is to host contemporary art, and Tsvetnoi Bulvar — music.
Tverskaya Ulitsa between Pushkin and Manezh squares will be closed to traffic from 8 am to 10 pm, as will Ulitsa Okhotny Ryad between Manezh and Lubyanka squares.
