Here is the initial schedule for next week's walks and parties. I hope to see as many of you as possible... if you come on a walk, don't forget a mobile phone and my number +7926 464 4352 just in case you can't find the meeting place. Walks are free, take place whatever the weather and everybody is welcome.

Wednesday 25th January - 'Frozen lakes and snowy palaces' : A brisk walk in the woods round Kuskovo... 10.15am - meet in the 'Metro' cafe near Ryazansky Prospekt metro station (purple line; exit near the back of the train and turn right out of the exit at street level - you should see the cafe then if it's still there). We will leave at 10.30am promptly and walk to Kuskovo palace (the palace grounds will be closed for their cleaning day so we won't actually go in). Then on to the White Lake where the route ends near the village of Kosino with a marshrutka ride back to Vykhino metro. If all goes to plan, we should arrive at the metro about 1pm in time for lunch and a visit to the market... 8km, medium-fast (as far as icy conditions permit!)

3.30pm: 'Princes and playwrights' - Meet in Macdonalds near Chisty Prudy metro station for an early evening stroll along the boulevard and through the theatres and mansions in the back streets to Krasny Vorota, ending around 5pm. about 3km, medium +. This walk could then perhaps turn into a bit of a pub crawl (I seem to remember there are some great bars in that area...). Let me know if you can join later...

Thursday 26th January - 'Space Age to Ice Age' -  Another wintry hike through the fabulous VDNKh exhibition grounds, meeting by 11am near the statue of Tsiolkovsky at the foot of the monument to the conquerors of space (see attached photo) very close to VDNKh metro station. NB: this route will be accompanied by a film crew (!) which may make it a bit slower and more complicated than usual, but there is plenty to look at. Filming will continue until about 3pm - people are welcome to leave earlier if they want to... we will have lunch somewhere and visit the botanical gardens. Roughly 4km, medium-slow with lots of great Moscow landmarks to explore.

Friday 27th January - 'Christmas Card Cottages' - A tour of Sokol village (also being filmed). Meet near the gates of All Saints Church near Sokol metro (green line) at 11am prompt. From the metro, follow exit signs to Ulitsa Alabyana. The church is yellow with a gold dome (see photo) and is directly behind the metro if you exit near the Subway cafe (where you could wait if you're early? - or inside the church; on the OTHER side of Leningradsky from Maxima Pizza). We will have a look at a few of the surviving wooden houses from the 1920s, finishing around 1pm, with the option of lunch afterwards. About 3km, medium-slow.

7pm - LAUNCH PARTY for 'Moscow Walks. Winter' in LPQ cafe at 32 Stary Arbat. Official invitation will follow.
Mayak at midnight, anyone?

Saturday, 28th January -  An afternoon stroll around the centre of town, starting and ending at the Hyatt Hotel on Neglinnaya Ulitsa. Times to be confirmed. about 4km, medium.

Sunday, 29th January - An informal open house afternoon/evening at wonderful Jane and Patrick's, just off Novy Arbat behind Dom Knigi... Curry from 2pm onwards; bring a bottle. You can buy copies of the new book there, bring copies you want signed and/or just relax with friends... See below for address and directions.

Monday, 30th January - 'Bards, bears and bandits'... Meet near the revolutionary monument outside 1905 Goda Metro (purple line - see photo 3) at 10.30am for a brief tour of the beautiful Vagankovskoe Cemetery, followed by a walk through an interesting area of town (round the back of the Zoo). We will finish with an unmissable soup-tasting at the home of Jennifer Eremeeva, talented cook, columnist and creator of 'Moscovore', http://www.moscovore.com/ near Mayakovskaya metro around 1pm. There will be another chance to buy books and have them signed here if you're interested... RSVP for this walk so that Jennifer knows how much soup to make.

see you soon!
