En sammanfattning från Forbes Magazine;
When a covey of young Russian women, in skimpy colorful dresses and bright tights – a punk band with the feministic name “Pussy Riot” – showed up at the Christ the Savior cathedral in Moscow and for less than a minute sang a prayer “Virgin Mary, Mother of God, help us and chase Putin away” they probably didn’t know that the Church, with all its power and ties to Putin’s government, wouldn’t take it lightly and initiate a criminal case against them.
The Russian Orthodox church arranged to have three girls, two of whom are the mothers of small children, arrested in March and are detained still, facing up to seven years in prison for “hooliganism.” The young mothers, reportedly, have been threatened to lose custody of their children.
The feminist band, Pussy Riot, used the idea of peaceful performances in public places to empower women in Russia and, right before the presidential elections in February, participated in anti-Putin protests. The anti-Putin prayer in the church might’ve looked extreme to many faithful people but in light of the situation, when people’s voices are not heard and requests for fair elections are ignored, stepping outside of the boundaries of normality is sometimes the only thing that’s left to do.
The Seattle Times
The Huffington Post
When I asked a Russian friend what he felt were the most important factors for foreigners to understand about Russian people, culture and country, he smiled, waved his arms and responded, "They cannot understand Russians, who act from their hearts, not from their heads. They do totally illogical things. To try and understand them with your mind is impossible. They are very passionate and act and feel in extremes. They love and hate in the extreme and do not comprehend balance.
"I think that learning how to have balance in all areas of our lives is probably one of the most important characteristics we as Russians need to acquire in order to be healthy. I know this is the case for me and my loved ones."
Many of my class participants relate that being balanced physically, emotionally, intellectually and spiritually is a major challenge. They often allow one or two of these aspects to dominate the others and problems emerge as a result. Their priorities also become unbalanced in the areas of relationships, health, work, recreational activities and giving to others.
..
Extreme black-and-white, all-or-nothing responses are not exclusively Russian traits. As a child growing up in a small Kansas farming community, moderation or balance was frowned upon as being "wishy-washy" and "a fence-sitter." Once you made up your mind on something, you kept to it. While commitment and loyalty are admirable qualities, the ability to listen respectfully to opposing views and a willingness to admit personal errors are essential for growth. Otherwise, one stays bound to tradition, even if that practice proves to be harmful in the long run.
In Russia, adhering to traditional mores is de rigueur for many. But valuing and encouraging the many good traits of this culture, while also having the courage to confront and change the destructive beliefs and behaviors, becomes a pathway to a healthy life even though that journey is often difficult.

Many people (actually - most of all the Russians themselves) keep telling me that "You cannot trust Russians", "Russians steal and cheat people" etc.
What I see day after day living here in Moscow is that Russia is Full of Warm, Loving, Caring, Trustworthy people who keep exceeding all expectations when it comes to helping you out in an unselfish way.
I keep telling how people have been friendly, unselfish or helped me and Julia out in different situations.
Those hearing it (mainly Russians) keep telling me to be careful and never trust people becuase they probably have some secret agenda and I don't understand the reality of how things work over here.
I keep seeing that time after time they were wrong and the friendly/helping Russian people were completely sincere and their actions simply reflected their warm hearts.
Tack Johan! Vilka uppfriskande ord!

I
know a lot of you are probably on holiday (have fun!) so I've decided
to put off my traditional walking/partying celebration trip to Moscow
until September, dates tbc. If you belong to a group, embassy, school or
whatever that might like me to come and talk about Moscow Walks, please
do get in touch. I will send invitations nearer the time.
Finally,
now that the Moscow Walks books are finished, I am starting a new

India, France, Bulgaria, Spain, Brazil, Italy, Japan, Belgium,

those countries and wouldn't mind (briefly!) sharing your experiences of
living in Moscow or travelling through Russia, do drop me a line.
Thanks.
Please do keep in touch anyway and I look forward to seeing lots of you in September,
cheers,

Ryssar och droger...
Psykologen Marilyn Murray analyserar vidare i Moscow Times.
Alcoholism had been a problem in Russia for centuries, but drugs were not a hazard until recent years. Many of the young conscripts who came home from the devastating war in Afghanistan in the 1980s were addicted to heroin. Then, with the fall of the Soviet system, organized crime groups flourished as drug traffickers swept in huge profits from this new, untouched market.
Afghanistan has continued to play a role as its production of heroin flows into Russia via Central Asia. Russia now can claim the title of the largest consumer of heroin and the fastest growing drug traffic in the world, with about 5 million drug users, an increase of 60 percent since 2000.
In addition, the small towns and villages strewn across the country that once depended upon Soviet industry are now decaying with poverty and joblessness. Thus, the people living there, especially the young, are vulnerable to the deadly call of drug addiction.
In 2002, a new killer of Russia's youth emerged called krokodil. An easily made designer drug used as a substitute for heroin, krokodil is three times more powerful than heroin and up to 10 times cheaper. The lethal components include gasoline and paint thinner, both extremely poisonous when injected.
Krokodil's narcotic ingredient is codeine, which until recently was readily available without a prescription in Russia. This accessibility transformed krokodil into a primarily Russian drug. Krokodil first appeared in Siberia and the Far East but then spread throughout the country.
Krokodil now is probably the most destructive of all addictions. It destroys the brain and literally eats the body. Photos on the Internet show hideous scenes of rotting flesh literally falling off of teenagers and young men and women, even exposing bones. While the average life expectancy of an active heroin addict is five to seven years, a krokodil addict faces a grotesque future of agony and death within one to three years. Only 1 percent of krokodil addicts have been able to become sober, and they carry the long-term damaging effects of permanent brain damage with speech and motor skill defects.
Despite widespread knowledge of codeine's contribution to krokodil, a law making codeine prescription-only did not become effective until June 1. Hopefully, this will now reduce the devastating reign of krokodil in Russia's drug culture. But, unfortunately, the venom of drug addiction will continue to drive addicts to find another substitute.

.....
The Russian government basically tells drug addicts, "Get
into treatment or go to prison." Regrettably, there is poor availability
of competent treatment centers.
Successful treatment for any addiction needs to address not only helping the addict to become sober but also to discover the root cause of his or her behavior. Unless the core issues of pain, fear, hopelessness, abandonment, rejection, shame and worthlessness are also made a primary focus of treatment, recovery will only be temporary, and the addict will return to the primary addiction source or simply shift into another type of addictive cycle.
Education covering a broad spectrum of the consequences of addictions needs to be a national focus.
One of my colleagues recently shared that as a university student in the early 1990s, he and his friends knew nothing about drug addiction and its destructive aspects. He regarded the 19 other students in his class as close friends and, like them, he was curious when one of the friends introduced the rest to drugs. He tearfully related that only four of the 20 are still alive today, including the dealer. Sixteen young Russian men died in their prime because they were naive and because one of them was a greedy hedonist without a conscience.

Sixteen young Russian men died in their prime because they were naive and because one of them was a greedy hedonist without a conscience.
...
If a foreign enemy threatened the health and welfare of Russians,
the government would instantly commit billions of rubles to combat
the treacherous foreigners. Yet education and compassion regarding
the devastating and deadly effects of addictions on Russian individuals
and families has been sadly lacking. Apathy instead of action continues
to be the order of the day.
Addictions will increase unless a major campaign is undertaken to educate the general populace and to provide effective treatment programs.

Ät rätt i sommar...

Läs artikeln: 'Can Unhealthy Systems Create Healthy Leaders?' här.
People often have difficulty understanding why someone stays in such an abusive situation. Similarly, many also question why millions of Russians remained in a destructive Soviet system for seven decades.
Being able to comprehend the aspects of a particular system, whether it is a family, organization, business, government or culture, helps a person to broaden and extend that insight to other systems. This view certainly applies both to the family described above and to the Soviet system. They each exhibited one, overarching rule: unquestioned obedience to authority. In this type of unhealthy system, the immutable authority strives for power and control.
Family members and citizens have no rights and are not allowed to make any decisions. They are kept isolated and convinced that life outside their system is more dangerous than what they experience within. They are bullied into thinking that they are powerless and of no worth and that the authority is the only one capable of leadership.
The authority ensures his subject's loyalty and commitment by providing their basic necessities and convincing them they cannot survive without him. They are inundated with lies proclaiming that their present situation is the best they will ever get.
Mistakes are not tolerated and are often punished harshly. Keeping a perfect front for the rest of the world is imperative. The authority never takes responsibility for internal errors and adamantly denies any perceived weakness within the system. Secrets abound, and when problems do occur within the system, they are never spoken of, even within the system. If, however, a weakness or mistake does become exposed to the outside world, someone from that "foreign" world is always blamed as the saboteur.
The leader controls by intimidation, fear and violence. If anyone shows the slightest sign of disobedience or considers leaving the system, severe punishment and threats of deadly consequences follow, not only for the rebel but also for other family members.
We cannot help but recognize the familial resemblance between the profile of a violent family and that of the country of Russia. Mother Russia is the quintessential battered wife. She has been married to a series of unhealthy leaders. Once the bloom of romance fades and the "groom" acquires a taste of power, the old pattern is repeated. Like the wife of a violent husband, Russia has been governed by totalitarian authorities with their own agendas regarding the "family rules."
...
Over the centuries, Mother Russia became a fierce fighter to protect her children from outside invaders, yet she has been unable to protect herself or her children from the victimizers who are members of her own family.
So why does she continue to marry unhealthy leaders and remain in destructive unhealthy systems? Because like all battered wives, she seeks what is common and familiar to her. The Soviet system became a classic example of an unhealthy system in which implicit submission to an immutable authority reigned and those living within the system were kept ignorant about the possibility that life could be any different.

Can this unhealthy system ever engender healthy leaders? Yes.
Unhealthy systems depend upon isolation and keeping their populace oblivious to the reality of their circumstances and without other options. However, their narcissistic leaders often underestimate humanity's innate drive to be free.
They personalize every protest and dissent and refuse to recognize that their system is destined to fail.
In the past, Mother Russia did not have options. Today she does.

My colleagues and I were enjoying dinner in a Moscow cafe when one of my friends began looking distressed. He said, "Something has been happening that is really upsetting me. Did you see the man and woman who came in about an hour ago with a little boy? They sat down at the table behind you, but after only a few minutes they got up and left the little guy alone. I think he is only about age 5 or 6 and has been trying so hard not to cry. A waitress brought him some food, but he hasn't touched any of it."
I immediately turned around and saw the small child near my chair. My two friends and I got up and knelt beside him. We invited him to sit with us, and while he adamantly shook his head no to us, he was unable to say no through the tears that began escaping from his pale-blue eyes. We told him we would watch out for him and make sure he was safe until his parents returned. He was trembling as he nodded in response.
When his parents finally returned, we couldn't help but overhear them as they sat down at their table. They did not apologize to their son for leaving him alone for over an hour, nor were they in any way sympathetic to his tears and obvious distress. Instead they laughed and said, "Well, we weren't gone that long and we told you we would be back! The next time we leave, we will give you a watch so you will know when we are returning." And the frightened little boy's mother and father continued to laugh and talk between themselves and completed ignored the fact that their son was very afraid and could easily have been abducted while they were absent.
My friends and I discussed the situation for quite a while. They had been in my classes when we addressed the issue of how during Soviet times, many children were left alone when their mothers were required to work and there were no relatives or child-care facilities available. I wrote of this situation last week and the tragedies that resulted from this imperative.
I realized that this little boy's parents probably thought, "Well, leaving him alone for an hour or so is no big deal. After all, he had food, it was a warm place, and there were plenty of people around him. He certainly should not complain. When I was a child, I was left alone for 10 hours a day in a freezing apartment in the winter with very little food. And that went on for years!"
I have listened to numerous stories attesting to the fact that leaving children alone is still common today in former Soviet countries. Many parents who experienced being left alone as children regard this as a normal experience for their little ones even though government requirement for doing so no longer exists. They may not leave their children for days on end, but they still believe that a few hours alone is tolerable for even a small child.

IKEA-sönerna i DI
